ELEMENT OF THE MONTH

I've chosen helium as this month's element because it's in the news. Helium is important stuff and we are wasting it on party balloons!! There is plenty of it in the universe but its in short supply on Earth because as it creeps out of cracks in the ground it floats off to the upper atmosphere. It is the only element that was not discovered on Earth, it was first identified on the Sun using spectrometry and that is where it's got its name... it's the first of the noble gases and doesn't react with anything and it's that property that makes it so useful.... so its time to start looking after it a little bit more responsibly!
